What a wonderful stretch of perfect weather. Off to work now after a great bike ride along the beautiful shores of Bras Dor Lakes! Must remember to take the camera next time.

Now Settling In

Schedule done, 16 hours a week, sun has been out... Have enjoyed the view on our adirondack chairs and even swam in the pool. Delightful people and I think I will be able to handle the work. Life is good!

Getting organized??

It's Saturday am and we decided it is finally time to get organized even though the site we are in is apparently temporary and we still don't have a schedule. Not even sure if we are working today! we do know we are on for tomorrow as it is there annual antique car show that we will be helping with somehow...Different to work in a place so loose.

Yesterday we did the Cabot Trail, a 300 km loop around the top of Cape Breton. It took us 7.5 hours with lots of stops. Now we have a sense of where to return to for some great looking hikes. So once again we had to sample some of the local foods including butter pies, blueberry scones, and chocolate croissants and just baked bread. we brought home a meat pie for dinner from the Acadian section in Cheticamp. Lots of art studios along the way.

SUN!!

After strolling the beautiful Baddeck Harbor, we drove about 15 miles to the nearest short hike to a waterfall. The big thrill was a Newfoundland who decided to jump on me and imprint my chest with 2 large mud prints..Sophie also got her first swim. she tried later to swim in the salt water lake, still tries to drink lots of salt water.

Training went well today although I made lots of mistakes. they tax so much here... All 15 percent...but I learned healthy groceries are not taxed...so water, veggies and bread have no tax;marshmallows, beer and candy are all 15 percent. I wonder what impact that makes on people's diets?

oh dear

Just met the other work campers and they told us there have been about 7 sunny days since they arrived mid June...The owner says it is the rainiest since they arrived 15 years ago and who says climate unrest is not happening...now just have to change expectations.

Work-training starts tomorrow afternoon and I think it will go well, just not sure how the grass gets cut in the mist.

We did enjoy an hour or so of sun and clouds today, just at a perfect little harbor: Margaree Harbor on the lower part of Cape Breton. what is amazing is how quiet it was everywhere we went. It felt like the Maine coast but so much more remote.

Our new home

When we woke up this morning to more cold and rain, I wondered what we were doing...miss home already, but I worked on adjusting my attitude as we drove for another 5 hours to our new home. I have to say I had to work on that as we have had quite the time setting up our new phone for emergencies in Canada. Verizon doesn't work here so wifi only will be used for Skype and I hope by tomorrow we can work thru this phone set up thing...( you see you have to phone in to set it up and trying to explain we had no phone was quite hilarious)

The campground is much more remote than in the brochure pictures ( brasdorlakescampground.com ) and very quiet. The managers Patsy and Pat, are from here and are very welcoming and laid back. We spent the early evening scoping out our new little town of Baddeck which is really lovely...small town, Maine coast feel without any development and few tourists...There is a great fish market on the wharf, nice shops and a coop grocery store. Also several outfitters for kayak, Puffin watches and sailing tours...Lots to see and do.

There should be sun on Wednesday so I will take pictures of home then, but here are a couple of shots of the Baddeck lighthouse and a tall ship going by.

A Beautiful Morning in Parrsboro, NS

We woke up to more cold and fog and wondered if this is what we are in for...But it cleared for the morning and we drove to the Parrsboro area where there are the biggest tides in the world: 44 feet! Luckily, it stayed sunny for 2 hours for incredible views of the misty cliffs on Partridge island that we found on 2 different dirt roads.

 

Afterwards we went to the Five Islands Provincial Park and walked on the mud flats. Hunger struck and we had the best clam and scallop sandwiches at a nearby restaurant called Grammy's. Wished we could have seen a tidal bore but after many hours on the road we gave up and went home.

tonight we are gearing up for the drive to our new home ( see Brasdorlakescampground.com ) and get ready to start work. It doesn't feel like summer here as it has stayed in the 60s but we are ready for what is ahead.
